“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” Anatole France
On Saturday, December 13, 2014, ten members of the Notre Dame Club of Austin were part of a return trip to volunteer at the Austin Animal Center. Once again our group helped ensure that most of the larger dogs all got time outside of their cages, and boy did they show their appreciation. “I didn’t really think of a pit-bull as a lap dog, but Beau was such a sweetie and he loved the liver treats!”
The Center has a wonderful facility and the other volunteers really make it easy and enjoyable to care for the animals. There are separate areas for bigger dogs, large pens for playing with a ball or chew toy, and small pens for interacting with the dogs and giving treats. The small dogs have another area and the cats have a separate building with string toys and cat perches.
The Center has an ongoing need for regular volunteers, so if you love animals, you can learn more about the work they do and how to support them by visiting their website: http://www.austintexas.gov/department/animal-services “Austin Animal Center runs the largest no-kill animal shelter in the United States, providing shelter to more than 18,000 animals each year and animal protection services to all of Austin and Travis County…The goal of the Austin Animal Center is to place all adoptable animals in forever homes.”

Holiday Puppy Party (& Kitty Christmas!)
What better way is there to release all of the pre-Christmas stress than to spend a few hours with some four-legged furry friends? Join us for the Club’s second visit to the Austin Animal Center this year, where we’ll ensure all of the animals get some quality outdoor time. (In May our group walked every “available” large dog in the center during our 3 hours on site!).

Please RSVP now here to reserve your play time with Bruno, Bella, and Bailey. You’ll make some new friends and get a good workout to boot. All volunteers must be at least 13 years of age and those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
AUSTIN ANIMAL CENTER (AAC) Group Volunteer Instructions The AAC welcomes Group Volunteers to interact with the dogs and cats housed at the Center. Your interaction may include petting and playing with cats and walking dogs. Keep in mind the shelter environment can be extremely stressful for all animals. Because of this stress, some animals may be reactive in a negative manner. We ask that you not treat these animals as you would you own pet. More experience and caution is necessary. All volunteers will be given an orientation and specific training on site.

Safety and Identification Requirements:

Have experience handling dogs to walk dogs
Wear closed shoes with good traction
Wear appropriate length pants – Bermuda shorts or longer
Wear corporate or same colored shirts (please wear ND Navy Blue)
